I heard from a YTer recently whose son was here in France, and some of his gadgets were stolen from his hotel room. Hotels will not be responsible for your valuables. The son was probably too confused to know how to go to the police and file a report. You must speak and understand fluent French in order to do this, true. And show your valid ID (passport, stamped and dated upon your arrival) -- you must carry it on you at all times here. Always leave a photocopy of all the pertinent pages with someone you trust who could fax it to the Consulate. If you pay in your local currency and have a photocopy, for American passports, the replacement fee is less and it only takes a few hours. You will have to go out and buy biometric ID photos, and you cannot smile, and your ears must show. No glasses allowed. At the US Consulate in Paris, which is quite a zoo these days and you cannot carry in food nor water and there are no restroom facilities anymore, I've met quite a few people who'd had everything stolen and getting a new passport was costly, took days, and they missed their return flights. Keep a spare photocopy in your luggage, also, of course. You can't be too careful. Even if you find a "taxiphone," the computers there are not secure and the deyboards are azerty. Reginald J. Mitchell developed a racing seaplane, the Supermarine S6B, which won the Schneider Trophy on 13th September, 1931. During the contest the aircraft reached 340 mph (547 km/h). In 1934 the Air Ministry announced that it was looking for a new fighter plane. Mitchell, whose company was now part of Vickers Aviation, decided to adapt his Supermarine seaplane, in an attempt to meet the requirements of the Royal Air Force. The new all-metal single-seat fighter plane, the Supermarine Spitfire Mk. I, had several technical features of the earlier racing seaplane. It had the same structure and aerodynamic lines. However, it had a new engine, the 1030 hp Rolls Royce Merlin and carried 8 machine-guns. The first Spitfire prototype appeared on 5th March, 1936 and flew at 350 mph (563 km/h) and could ascend at approximately 2500 ft (762 m) per minute. With its slender aerodynamic lines and elliptical-plan wings, it was claimed at the time, to be the smallest and cleanest aircraft that could be constructed around a man and an engine. The Royal Air Force was impressed with its performance and in June, 1936, it ordered 310 aircraft. The Supermarine Spitfire Mk. I went into production in 1937 and was operational in June, 1938. Vickers Aviation could not keep up with demand and most of Britain's manufacturers began building Spitfires. By October, 1939, the Air Ministry had ordered over 4000 of these airplanes. An Impossibly Idyllic Fishin' Hole in France

Hee hee hee! You do need a license to fish here in France, so please check on this before you try it. But it's a popular sport here. This is at the Château de Sceaux, South of Paris, France. This canal basin also seemed good for sailing fancy toy boats, and picnicking is allowed all around without fires. Dogs are permitted on leashes. You can get here via public transportation (bus). It's enormous, and the château has the Museum of the Greater Paris Region inside (Musée de l'Ile-de-France). Learn all about the French specialty - Steak Tartare. "I have worked here at the Brasserie du Theatre for 10 years. Steak Tartar is a dish that our customers order often because people do not have it too often in their own homes. What you should know is, once the meat is ground up, it only stays good for about an hour. There you have an egg, some capers, there you have some onions and here you have some pickles and over there you have some parsley. Next, I am going to add just a bit of ketchup. Then some mustard, and then the magic touch, a dash of olive oil. There are a lot of people who make Steak Tartar with mayonnaise and that, to me, is unacceptable. So here we have the true Steak Tartar in the purest form. And you should know that Steak Tartar in the beginning was made from horse meat that was chopped up with a knife. The basis for the real steak tartar was horse meat, but now, in France in restaurants, we are not allowed to serve horse meat anymore. We make it with beef. Here you see, you have to mix it very well. I will arrange it nicely on another plate. For me, the way I prepare it is the purest methods, but in larger brasseries it is often made with mayonnaise. To me, that is not the pure recipe, but that is just my opinion because ...
